Alan King insists the best is still to come from his Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle hope Medermit ahead of the trainers attempt to win the race for the second time in two years.
Medermit currently a best price of 14-1 (Ladbrokes) to win at the festival was last seen when trouncing last year’s Champion Hurdle winner Punjabi by four lengths at Haydock in January.
“Medermit goes straight to Cheltenham and is in wonderful form physically,” King said. “At the time no one realised the strength of last season's Supreme Novices' Hurdle.”
"Go Native [a narrow winner from Medermit] has certainly gone on and so has Somersby - and I don't think we have seen the best of Medermit yet. He has surprised me but I think he is still improving.”
The Barbury Castle trainer won the Champion Hurdle with Katchit in 2008 and although having had a quiet start to the season, seems have turned the corner in recent weeks having a string of winners.
"I’m much happier with the horses. There's no way we can catch up on what we missed before Christmas,” he continued, “but I'm comfortable with where we are now.”
